Our 2009 Christmas Tree Hunt

Every year we buy a tree permit from the forest service and drive up Spring City canyon to find our perfect Christmas Tree. This year was no different except we were spared waiting in line for 90 min at 7am in 10 degree weather to get one of the 300 or so permits they sell. Normally that is the hard part and finding the "perfect tree" is the easy part.

This year we tromped though the snow carrying Porter and Charlie, while Aidan was sledding down the road, for over an hour. I was feeling done so I pointed to a fine looking tree a short distance away and told Max to just cut that one down so we could be done. Being the amazing husband he is, he cut without arguing. Well, the tree turned out to be about 20 feet tall and we only have 9 ft ceilings. After cutting 6 ft off the top and 5 ft off the bottom we ended up with a lovely tree.

The boys were patient and well behaved and even let me take some cute pictures of them. It was another great tree hunt, and definitely one we'll remember.

Cute boys in the Backyard

I just thought I would post these pictures of the boys playing in the backyard at our new house because they are adorable. Charlie started walking the week after his first birthday last month and now there is no stopping him. He is trying to run everywhere to catch up with his big brothers. He also likes to climb. He is always getting up onto things I would not imagine him capable of climbing. They all love to ride around in the little John Deere truck. Aidan puts Charlie in the back sometimes and the big boys drive him around the yard.

Aidan's 1st day of Kindergarten

Aidan started Kindergarten last friday. He is really excited about going to school with the "big kids." He walks the three blocks every morning with his friend Will (though currently he is also followed by his protective mother and two younger brothers). Here are a couple of pictures of him in front of our new house, which Max calls the gingerbread house. There is also a picture of him in his classroom.
I am very proud of my intelligent, kind, and handsome son.

Camping in Moab

We recently went camping in Moab with some friends from Mt Pleasant. We took the kids hiking to Corona Arch.

This is a picture of Charlie with Corona Arch in the background.

"Being carried around is exausting," said Charlie.

Our three boys in front of the pictograph panel in Cane Creek Canyon, Moab.

All of my favorite boys!!

They've got the early morning sillies.

Aidan Rides the Blue Bombito!

Aidan made me so proud! He was a little scared to ride on the dirt. But after ten minutes riding around on the school's field, he was ready! Honestly, I was a little misty... -A proud papa. I remembered my first time riding a motorcycle; I nearly killed myself. Aidan has his mother's sensibility though and rode like a champ!

I love living here in a place where it is clean, safe, and fun.

Come visit the "Roach Motel" for good food, cold beer and unforgettable adventures. -We have extra bikes too! If you're lucky, Aidan might just give you a motorcycling lesson. ;-)

Busy, Busy, Busy!

So its been a long time since I posted. Spring keeps teasing us with its start..almost.. We are definitely ready to get outside and play. Recently we got a new puppy. His name is Maico, after some old German motorcycle, and he is a Great Pyrenees. We got him about 2 months ago when he was 9 weeks and about 10 lbs. He is now 4 months old and about 40 lbs. His papa weighed in at about 130 so we expect him to be enormous. He is pretty good with the kids and he looks like the baby of our other Pyrenees mix Brodie. About 2 weeks after we got Maico, our baby Charlie became very sick with a strange unknown virus. The puppy was also very sick with what seemed like parvo. Charlie had to spend a few days in isolation at Primary Children's. They tested him for everything they could even remotely believe was making him sick. Everything came up negative. It was like an episode of house with all the docs around a white board comparing his symptoms with know viruses. It was scary and strange but all is well now and he is just a normal crawling busy 9 month old. Maico is also fine and maybe even more mellow than a normal puppy due to all his sick down time.

Max just got home from Japan where he was collecting images for his upcoming book. We don't expect its release until then end of 2010 or the beginning of 2011. It was a crazy 2 weeks with just the kids and I, but we did all right. We got some baby chicks to replace the our chickens that mysteriously disappeared. We also got some free turkens, also known as turkey hens, which are very very ugly. They have featherless necks with a tuft of feathers on top of their heads making them look like dinosaurs. I named them turkendactyl and turkenrex. I have been told they lay extra yummy eggs so I 'll keep them around a while.

Thats the condensed version of the Roach news. We are counting down the last 10 weeks of school and looking forward to a long summer with Max. I see lots of camping, hiking, and motorcycling in our future.

Just a reminder.. We enjoy having visitors if you're even in our neck of the woods. We'd love to share a meal with you.

Three Cheers for Hot Springs!!

A couple weeks ago we went on our annual trip to Lava Hot Springs. It is a little town in Idaho with some small motels, a grocery store and a whole bunch of natural hot springs. We went with four other families from Wasatch and rented a big house and a couple of Motel rooms. It worked well to have a home base where all the kids could run around and play. We had a blast!! All of the kids loved swimming in the hot water, and we had the best weather ever. It was warm enough outside, maybe 30 degrees, that you could stay in the water for a couple of hours without getting frozen hair. If you have never been there you should give it a try. It is a cozy funky town, and its fairly cheap for a weekend vacation.. Here are a couple of pictures of the kids.

One more trip back in time.........

One more trip back in time.. Here is a little bit of our Christmas adventure this year. We love having my family spend Christmas with us. Aidan lets Uncle D and Meredith sleep in his bunk beds. We fill our little house with people, laughter, presents, food and of course liquor. I hope you all had a wonderful holiday with your freinds and family as well.

So, this year Max started looking at little 50 cc motorcycles for our boys. I thought it was a terrible idea to get a 4 1/2 year old a motorcycle. "Way to dangerous,"I said, though I knew it was a losing battle. Max had gotten a motorcycle when he was 6 in Lake Tahoe, and those were some of his
best memories from growing up. Then I started thinking about all of the things that people do with their young children that are also dangerous. Like skiing, snowboarding, hunting, not to mention living in polluted air, and driving in cars while talking on cell phones, you know everyday life. So, I realized that anything can be done in a safer or more dangerous way, and I guess that applies to motorcycles. Also, he wears a helmet, chest protector, gloves, padded pants, goggles, and probably will have training wheels

SO after a little motorcycle rant, here are our Christmas pics from this year. My Mom, Step Dad, Brother and Sister, came down to Mt. P and had Christmas with us. This is a very relaxing and beautiful place to spend Christmas. No one has to drive anywhere (there's nothing open and nowhere to go) and everybody gets to watch the kids enjoy Christmas morning. The boys did get their motorcycle. Its a blue 50 cc Yamaha peewee called the Blue Bombito (Daddy's bike is also a blue Yamaha called the Blue Bomber). We all got plenty of presents, not that any of us needed anything, and then we made a snow hill and fort in the front yard. It snowed all day! I think it was the best Christmas ever!!!!!

Travel back in time to October 2008

Here are the boys Halloween pictures. They were so sweet that I thought I would take this Blog back in time to show them to you. Porter is the Little Pirate, Aidan is The blue and black Spiderman (I guess he is the Bad one, or so Aidan told me), and Charlie is the little caterpillar. So damn cute I could puke ;)
We went to Boo at the Zoo in SLC. It was the most crowded I have ever seen it, so these might be our last Boo pictures for a few years.
